Funds Raised Will Benefit Children and Elderly in Need
JOPLIN, Mo. - December 04, 2009 - Con-way Truckload, a full-truckload carrier and subsidiary of Con-way Inc. (NYSE: CNW), today announced that its employees raised $79,600 in the company’s annual Truckloads of Treasures holiday giving campaign — beating last year’s total by more than $18,000. Con-way Truckload will use the proceeds to support area children and senior citizens in need during the holidays through a combination of purchased gifts and donations to local nonprofit organizations.
Approximately 200 Con-way Truckload employees, family members and friends gathered at Target in Joplin on Dec. 3 to purchase toys, blankets, clothing and food for children and senior citizens in the local area. The company will also donate $7,000 to The Salvation Army and $3,000 to the Alliance of Southwest Missouri on behalf of the State of Missouri Children’s Division. They will use the funds to purchase food baskets for families in need. Each of the following charitable agencies will also receive a donation of $3,730 for their work specifically focusing on youth and the elderly: Area Agency on Aging, Boys and Girls Club, The Bridge, Camp Quality, Children’s Haven, House of Hope, Magic Moments Riding Therapy and Ronald McDonald House.
“The generosity of Con-way Truckload and their partnership has played a vital part in supporting children in area foster homes,” said Jean Rodriguez, circuit manager, State of Missouri Children's Division. “The Children’s Division is very grateful to Con-way Truckload for its commitment to help improve the lives of foster children and brighten their holiday. The need for support for the families and children we serve continues to be crucial to our mission.”
In addition to the Joplin event, Con-way Truckload employees will be assisting with company-sponsored charitable efforts in West Memphis, Ark.; Taylor, Mich.; Hazelton, Pa.; and Lancaster and Laredo, Texas.
To raise contributions for Truckloads of Treasures, Con-way Truckload’s executive management team and the company’s Values Task Force donated prizes to be raffled off to employees. Several members of the executive team also purchased tickets directly for employees, bolstering their chances of winning. Tickets were sold at different dollar amounts, depending on the raffle prize. This year’s items included a day off with pay plus $250 in cash; $200 cash; one week off with pay; two weeks off with pay; gift cards in amounts ranging from $200 to $400 to local and national businesses; and a Nintendo DSi portable game system.
“Giving back to our community is something we believe in strongly at Con-way Truckload, and this year our employees really outdid themselves with their generosity,” said Herb Schmidt, president, Con-way Truckload. “The Truckloads of Treasures program is an important way for us to help those in need during the holiday season, and I am proud to say that we beat our 2008 fundraising record by 30 percent this year.”
Since 1998, Truckloads of Treasures has presented more than $330,000 in employee-raised donations to local organizations through the program.
