From a new heavy-duty component logistics facility DB Schenker supplies wind turbines throughout Europe with components

(Berlin/Essen/Leipzig, 16 September 2011) DB Schenker and Vestas, the global market leader for wind turbines, recently opened an approximately 5,000 square meter logistics facility for heavy-duty components near Leipzig, Germany as extension to their existing 10,000 square meter European spare parts hub. “The new logistics facility has set the stage to guarantee Vestas fast and efficient spare part and service logistics – from the smallest screw to massive gearboxes and generators,” says Dr. Michael A. Kluger, Member of the Management Board of Schenker Deutschland AG responsible for Contract Logistics/SCM.

The new facility gives DB Schenker over 15,000 square meters for planning, managing and monitoring the complex spare part, component and tool logistics for the wind power expert Vestas. The building, which stands opposite the existing logistics complex, was designed specifically for handling sensitive heavy-duty components for wind turbines.

“Downtime at our facilities means loss of production, which translates into financial losses for our customers. We absolutely must be able to provide spare parts to our service technicians quickly to prevent stoppages and to ensure prompt reaction times. Thanks to our effective service infrastructure and the expanded logistics hub, we are always able to keep up with the growing transaction volume and satisfy our customers’ high standards to the fullest in terms of delivery times, flexibility and quality,” says Hans Jörn Rieks, President of Vestas Central Europe.

The new logistics facility features a covered thoroughfare to load and unload vehicles. Two overhead cranes, which can hoist up to 60 metric tons each, make it possible to handle heavy-duty components. DB Schenker has operated the central European spare parts warehouse for Vestas since 2008. Seventy logistics experts provide over 750 Vestas technicians with some 12,000 urgently needed spare parts, components, tools and personal protection equipment daily for performing repairs and maintenance on over 7,900 wind turbines in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Croatia, Bulgaria and Romania. The integrated logistics solution also comprises management of the international depot network, transport controlling and tool distribution including processing returns for parts to be repaired.
