Hong Kong, 23 November 2011 - Kerry Logistics’ Product Customization and Consolidation Centre (PC3) in Tai Po, Hong Kong is the first industrial building in Hong Kong to be HK-BEAM (Gold) certified. This purpose-built facility has also received LEED (Gold) certification, an internationally-recognized green building accreditation, as the design and construction of the building has incorporated green technology.

With a total area of 25,700 square metres (or 277,000 square feet), PC3 is designed for international fashion and lifestyle brands, serving as a regional distribution centre where product kitting, packing/repacking, assembling, customisation and consolidation are centralised. It is also equipped with a Garment-On-Hanger (GOH) Centre – the largest facility of its kind in Hong Kong in terms of scale and capacity. The facility supports the daily replenishment of all retail stores in Hong Kong for a major multinational retail chain, covering hanging and boxed garments as well as accessories, footwear and home products.

“This is a major achievement for Kerry Logistics as we are striving to improve the environmental performance of all of our facilities. It also helps us raise the standards to meet growing demand from our customers to reduce carbon footprint and embrace green technology,” said Samuel Lau, Director of Kerry Logistics (Hong Kong).

HK-BEAM Gold compliance, from Hong Kong-BEAM Society, signifies that the building has been assessed to meet a high standard of environmental performance. HK-BEAM aims to assure working and living environments are healthier, of a higher quality, are more durable, efficient and environmentally sustainable.

The certification comprises comprehensive standards for all types of buildings, new and old in Hong Kong and provides the construction industry with a means by which to benchmark and improve performance of buildings.

The PC3 facility’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification was awarded by the US-based Green Building Council. The international award is a result of Kerry Logistics’ investment in green technology including features such as energy saving lighting, double-glazed windows positioned to maximize natural light, rainwater harvesting and eco-friendly paint finishes.

LEED provides building owners and operators with a framework for identifying and implementing practical and measurable green building design, construction, operations and maintenance solutions.

Other eco-friendly systems include a green roof, where grass and foliage have been planted to act as a natural insulator for the building and it also provides natural habitat for local wildlife. The garden’s grass and plants are watered using harvested rainwater. The roof space also houses solar panels and wind generators to help meet the building’s energy needs.
