Schneider’s ability to deliver cost savings, enhanced sustainability and security among factors in win
GREEN BAY, Wis. and MEXICO CITY - August 8, 2012 – Last month, Schneider National de Mexico, a premier provider of transportation, intermodal and logistics services and part of the Schneider National enterprise, received the prestigious Premio Nacional de Logística (National Logistics Award) in recognition of its Mexico Direct Intermodal service.
Schneider was chosen as the top winner in the Logistics Supplier category, its first time competing for the honor. The award was presented at Mexico’s Expologística by a consortium of judges that included Mexico’s Secretary of Economy and representatives from several universities, transportation publications, and trade and transportation groups. The judges cited four important factors inherent in Schneider’s Mexico Direct Intermodal service that helped earn top honors: Cost savings of an average 15 to 18 percent better than other transportation methods; environmental sustainability including reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and fuel consumption; enhanced freight security over other modes and Schneider’s efforts to shift the paradigms traditionally associated with intermodal transportation.
“Being recognized with Mexico’s most prestigious logistics award is a great honor,” says Jim Filter, general manager of Schneider National de Mexico. “Our Mexico Direct Intermodal service has continued to grow each year since its debut, but we’re most proud of the difference it is making for shippers importing and exporting goods between Mexico and the rest of North America. It’s important, rewarding work, and we take our responsibility to continually improve customers’ supply chains very seriously.”
As the leading provider of cross-border services, Schneider has been offering the Mexico Direct Intermodal solution as part of its broad portfolio since 2009. It delivers a nonstop, borderless service from the U.S. and Canada into bonded rail terminals in Monterrey, San Luis Potosi and Mexico City and back. As opposed to standard intermodal service, which requires numerous stops with each cross-border transaction, Schneider’s Mexico Direct takes the complexity out while making the move seamless and timely throughout all of North America. This is accomplished by:
• providing preclearance customs notification before the train even leaves the initiating ramp and completing all the necessary paperwork long before loads reach the border (preventing costly delays)
• simplifying load configurations by using Schneider-owned orange stackable, 53' containers
• monitoring freight in real time throughout the movement
• relying on Schneider’s 20 years of experience operating in Mexico and taking advantage of brick-and-mortar presence on both sides of the border
Osram Sylvania, a lighting manufacturer that began using Mexico Direct when it was in the early stages of development in 2007, lauded the advantages and benefits of using Schneider’s cross-border intermodal service.
“We were mainly unaware of how efficient and cost effective this mode of transport was before we became a Schneider customer,” said Hector Lopez Malo, Logistics Manager at Osram Sylvania. “We used to move this freight in the past via over-the-road, but we were looking for a solution to reduce transportation and supply chain cost with transit time that rivals OTR. We also wanted the peace of mind that comes with finding a safe way to move our highly sensitive/fragile product between Mexico and the U.S. The Schneider Mexico Direct solution met our logistics needs and service expectations. In fact, it has allowed us to move freight faster than other intermodal service transportation between the U.S. and Mexico.”
Schneider has been providing intermodal and truckload cross-border service to Mexico for over 20 years. Today, the carrier moves over 300 loads per day across the border.
