Virgin Atlantic Cargo has added another four-legged celebrity to its ‘passenger list’ by helping Mugly, an 8-year-old Chinese Crested rescue dog from Peterborough carry off the title of ‘The Ugliest Dog in the World’.

Ugly Mugly was given the full star treatment by Virgin Atlantic Cargo as he flew out to California to compete against 29 other distinctive dogs looking to claim the prize at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in Petaluma . 2012 is the 24th annual contest and when it came to choosing the ‘ugliest in show’ everyone agreed that Mugly was clearly top dog.

Winning the title has catapulted Mugly onto the world stage with features lined up in national newspapers in the UK, morning TV appearances scheduled and his own Channel 5 television documentary called ‘Mutt Ugly: the world’s ugliest dog!’. Now, there’s even talk of a book deal!

Proud owner Bev Nicholson was quick to thank the Virgin Atlantic Cargo team for giving Mugly his flight to victory. She said: “The Virgin team were great and helped to make Mugly feel like a star even before he was crowned! We really appreciated the hands on care and attention he was given and he was certainly on top form when he arrived in the U.S. We thought he’d be the underdog against so many American pets but he did us proud!”

Helen Evans, who runs Virgin Atlantic Cargo’s pet travel service, said: “We are delighted to have played a part of Mugly’s well-earned success. As well as having a famous face, Mugly is also a therapy dog who helps children with reading difficulties to build up their confidence so he fully deserved some pampering. We understand he is now getting offers from businesses and media around the world so we hope to welcome him back onboard one of our flights in the near future.”

Mugly is not the only globally-acclaimed pooch to fly with Virgin Atlantic Cargo this year. Uggie, the 10-year-old Jack Russell Terrier and star of the Oscar-winning silent movie, The Artist, climbed aboard with Virgin Atlantic Cargo for a flying visit between Los Angeles and London to appear on The Graham Norton Show, BBC News, Channel 5 News, Blue Peter and Newsround to name a few following the movie’s outstanding success .
