There was a bit of an issue this holiday season with some packages not arriving as per the promised delivery timelines. FedEx and UPS both had to deal with issues caused by late deliveries.
Some have been surprised to hear, however, that the U.S. Postal Service performed perfectly and was unable to avoid delays faced by their competitors during the immediate pre-holiday period. This is impressive, especially considering that their holiday package volume was 19% higher than what they dealt with last year.
What’s their secret? According to USPS representatives, it’s all in the planning. After the agency noted the volume increase adjustments were made to avoid delays, including making Sunday deliveries in addition to the already scheduled ones from Amazon. 75,000 packages were delivered on Christmas Day alone.
This was a good case study for the different models used in the competitive world of home delivery. Other providers are more focused on urgent and speedy deliveries, and tend to spend less time on long-term planning. Considering this, will more people be using USPS to ship their packages next year? Will they take a page out of their book and plan ahead, sending their holiday parcels earlier just in case? Either way, USPS comes out on top.
