Speaker/Panel Bios:

Bob Armstrong, C.I.T.P., SCL President
Bob Armstrong, C.I.T.P., is President of Armstrong Trade and Logistics Advisory Services Inc. (ATLAS). On November 1,2007 Bob was appointed President of Supply Chain & Logistics Association Canada (SCL). Bob has over 40 years of experience in the fields of Global Supply Chain, International Trade, Cross Border Logistics and Customs Regulations and procedures.

Bob Armstrong also served as President and CEO for the Canadian Association of Importers and Exporters Inc. for nine years and as President of the Association of International Automobile Manufacturers of Canada (AIAMC) for nine years.

Prior experience includes nine years in Senior Management in the Supply Chain & Logistics industry and several years in Ottawa with a major Government Relations Firm and earlier as a Partner of a Major Public Accounting Firm

Since establishing his own business in February 2006, Bob has specialized in the marine sector where he acts as the Project Director for MarineLink,Inc. which is developing several short sea shipping initiatives. Marinelink is a subsidiary of Upperlakes Group Inc. and has been established to develop and implement new services on the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Seaway (HWY H2O).

Bob Armstrong is a well known national and international speaker, author, and expert on issues related to International Trade, Cross-Border Logistics, the Global Supply Chain, and Customs and Security issues. Bob is very active on the Board of Directors of ,the Ontario Chamber of Commerce (Chair,Borders,Transportation & Infrastructure Committee),National Vice-President of Hong Kong Canada Business Association and President Toronto Section, HKCBA. Bob is Chair of the Goods Movement Roundtable at Metrolinx , studying transportation challenges from Durham Region through to Hamilton.

In May 2005, Mr. Armstrong was awarded the prestigious McMillan Binch Mendelsohn Canadian Achievement Award in recognition of his outstanding contribution to Canada and to Canada’s advancement in International Trade.

Lou Smyrlis, CTL
Lou Smyrlis is the Editorial Director of the Transportation Media properties with Business Information Group, one of Canada's largest business magazine publishers.

These properties include Canadian Transportation & Logistics and three publications serving the motor carrier sector, two Web sites with daily news services and a research group. Combined these properties have a circulation of more than 150,000 providers and buyers of transportation services across Canada.

Lou is also a host for the award-winning Web TV show, Transportation Matters. He has been reporting on transportation issues for 20 years and is a winner of several writing awards.

A frequent speaker on industry issues he is a leading authority on industry trends having pioneered several industry research projects.

His work has been published by the Harvard School of Business, referenced in university research papers and included in a university textbook on management practices.

Robert Hogue, Senior Economist, RBC
Robert Hogue is a member of the Macroeconomic and Regional Analysis Group, with RBC Economics Research.  He is responsible for providing economic forecasts and analysis of the various regions of Canada.  In this function, he is frequently called to comment on the economy both internally within RBC and externally with clients and the media.

Mr. Hogue joined RBC in May 2008 after spending 15 years with another Canadian financial institution as a senior economist specializing in industrial analysis. His numerous collaborations included a monthly bulletin on commodity prices. At the outset of his career, Mr. Hogue spent four years as an economist with Ontario Hydro, where he specialized in industrial and macroeconomic analysis.

Dr. Alan Saipe, President, Supply Chain Surveys Inc.
Dr. Saipe has been involved with supply chain and logistics management for most of his working career – as a management consultant, an educator, and a line manager. He has consulted for 30 years with BearingPoint, formerly KPMG Consulting, and its predecessor companies, and now, as the Principal of Saipe & Associates. Dr. Saipe is also the President of Supply Chain Surveys Inc., a company that develops and delivers customized industry-based supply chain benchmarking surveys.

Dr. Saipe has had a long affiliation with Supply Chain & Logistics Canada. He is a Past Chairman of the Association, having been on its National Board of Directors for 9 years. He teaches executive courses at the Schulich School of Business where he held an appointment as an Associate Professor and taught in the MBA program in the 1970’s. He has also held an appointment as an Adjunct Professor at the School of Management, University of Toronto, where he taught in the Executive MBA Program, and was also Director of Operations at Connaught Laboratories Limited.

Dr. Saipe obtained his B.A.Sc. in Engineering Science and his M.A.Sc. and Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering from the University of Toronto.

Ginnie Venslovaitis, Director, Transportation Operations, HBC
Ginnie started her career in the US Customs Clearance industry.  She holds her US Customs Broker’s license and spent many years qualifying goods for Free Trade in private industry.

After moving to Canada Ginnie worked in the food industry, managing the domestic and cross border transactions for Borden Catelli.  From the foods industry she transitioned to Lever Brothers, managing both transportation, cross border clearance and the warehousing needs in soap and the personal care business.  As the transition of Lever Brothers changed and the company grew the mergers and acquisitions of Cheseborough Ponds, Helene Curtis, Lipton, Bestfoods and eventually Good Humor Bryers; Ginnie was back in the foods business again.  The size of the new portfolio put Ginnie responsible for the domestic transportation needs of all divisions.  Ginnie has had numerous opportunities and experiences on SAP project implementations and gained a great understanding of the total business enterprise.

In the spring of 2010 Ginnie left Unilever to join The Hudson’s Bay Company, and is currently Director of Transportation Operations there.  Ginnie is Vice Chair Finance for the CITT, Chair of CITA, member of the SCL and holds a PLog designation.

Doug Munro, President and CEO, Maritime Ontario
Doug Munro has been president and owner of Maritime-Ontario Freight Lines Limited and its Group of Companies since 1983. Maritime-Ontario is a general freight and multi-modal transportation company headquartered in Brampton, handling shipments between Ontario, Quebec and both Atlantic and Western Canada.The Group of Companies employs approximately 1,200 staff, drivers and owner-operators and was recently recognized as one of Canada’s 50 Best Managed Companies. Doug also serves as director for Ontario Trucking Association and Traffic Injury Research Foundation of Canada.

Doug has an active involvement in many charity organizations including his role as president/director of Peel Children’s Aid Foundation and President of Graham Munro Charitable Foundation.  

Doug graduated from University of Toronto with a degree in economics and commerce.

Doug Payne, President, Nulogx
Doug Payne is the President of Nulogx bringing over 25 years of experience in the Transportation Industry and is responsible for building our franchise network of all Nulogx products and services. He has a proven track record of leading transportation companies through growth.

Prior to joining Nulogx, Doug held the position of Chief Operating Officer at Consolidated Fastfrate Inc. and was President of PBB North American Transportation. Doug started in the Intermodal Transportation business in 1982 as a Senior Partner in Sunac America and sold the company to Clarke in March of 1994. As President of Clarke Logistics, Doug grew the company to 17 offices in Canada, USA and Mexico and helped it become one of the largest 3rd party companies in Canada. Doug is a past Board Member of the Intermodal Marketing Association and has been active in many Transportation Clubs and Associations.

Doug graduated from Sheridan College with a degree in Business Administration with a Sales and Marketing Major.
