The top 100 NVOCCs (Non-Vessel Operating Common Carriers) in December had an unexpected upswing from November. U.S. NVOs increased 8.6% in December with 89% of them posting a rise from the previous month. As for the year of 2013, the top 100 NVOs increased 2% from 2012 and accounted for 77% of the TEUs that U.S. NVOs handled this year, almost 4.8 million TEUs.
At the top of the list for December, and for all of 2013, is Expeditors International with over 388,000 TEUs handled in 2013, which is an increase of 3% from 2012. Although, this was not much of a surprise, there were some underdog-NVOs in 2013 that jumped up the list from 2012. Christal Lines moved from the 13th to the 5th top NVO from 2012 to 2013, it increased its volume from last year by 79%. Topocean Consolidation Service of Los Angeles also increased its TEU volume significantly by 10% in 2013 and bounced from 12th to the 7th largest NVO. Overall, 59% of the top NVOs in 2013 increased from 2012. Total U.S. TEU imports for 2013 increased almost 4%.
