CHARLOTTE, N.C. (August 7, 2009) - Horizon Lines, Inc., (NYSE:HRZ), the nation's leading domestic ocean shipping and integrated logistics company, has topped the list of ocean carriers worldwide for schedule reliability in the second quarter 2009 with 100% on time performance, according to Drewry Shipping Consultants, based in London.
"This is a real credit to our entire team, but especially our operations group," said John Keenan, President and Chief Operating Officer, Horizon Lines, LLC. "In today's challenging environment for carriers and the industry as a whole, we showed that service reliability for our customers always remains the top priority."
This honor comes after Horizon Lines was awarded the Platinum Carrier Award earlier this year from home improvement retailer Lowe's Companies Inc. for providing 100% on-time service in 2008.
Horizon Lines is the only ocean carrier serving each of the domestic U.S. trades of Alaska, Hawaii, Guam and Puerto Rico. Horizon Lines has been continually recognized in recent years for schedule integrity, vessel maintenance and safety programs, while making efficiency gains to help mitigate the environmental impact from its ships.
"We serve as a lifeline to our markets, which depend on ocean shipping for necessities such as food, clothing and construction materials," Keenan said. "Everyone at Horizon Lines takes this responsibility very seriously."
Horizon's vessel performance is particularly noteworthy given the fact that the carrier operates Jones Act ships that are comparatively older than vessels operated by most major international ocean carriers. Regular maintenance and upgrades keep these vessels operating at peak performance. The Jones Act federal statute mandates that ocean carriers serving U.S. coastwise trades must use U.S. built, flagged and crewed vessels.
Drewry's schedule monitoring survey tracked nearly 1,700 vessels in the three months between April 1 and June 30, 2009, and compared the scheduled day of arrival at the destination port with the actual day of arrival.
