NYK Donates Refrigerated Containers to Earthquake-stricken Town

E-mail

June 23, 2011 - NYK has donated 10 40-foot refrigerated containers to the Japanese town of Onagawa in Miyagi prefecture, which is still recovering from the effects of the earthquake and tsunami that struck in March.

The refrigerated containers, which were originally utilized for the ocean transport of perishable goods, will be used for on-land refrigeration as part of a donation project sponsored by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism and the Fisheries Agency in the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries to support the quick recovery of the fishery industry in the Sanriku shoreline area, which also includes the towns of Ishinomaki, Kesennuma, and Minami-Sanriku in Miyagi prefecture, and Oofunato in Iwate prefecture. Necessary material and equipment is being donated by private companies and range from refrigerated containers to trucks, forklifts, and business supplies that include computers, desks, and chairs.

The refrigerated containers, the first goods to be donated through this project, were sent to Onagawa on June 20 and 21.

NYK will continue to provide support to those in need to demonstrate the group’s commitment to remaining a socially responsible corporation.
