NYK will be providing donations and free ocean transport for relief supplies in response to the powerful typhoon that occurred in the Philippines on September 26, the earthquake and subsequent tsunami that struck Samoa and American Samoa on September 29, and the earthquake and subsequent tsunami that hit the Indonesian island of Sumatra on September 30. We offer our condolences to those in these areas and our wishes for a quick recovery.
Shipments of aid will be coordinated with Japan Platform (JPF)*, an international humanitarian assistance organization?through NYK Group - JPF Joint Aid Supplies Transportation Projects that NYK has worked with since 2004. Furthermore, the NYK Group has started to collect donations from employees within the group. NYK will add a “matching gift”** to the collected donations.
Many of those in the affected areas are still suffering great hardship from the aftermaths of these disasters, and complete recovery is expected to take a while. In the meantime, NYK wishes to be some support to victims through this aid project.
NYK continues to take an active role in activities that benefit society in the company’s effort to remain a benevolent, sustainable, and socially responsible corporate citizen.
*Japan Platform is an international humanitarian assistance organization established to provide quick and effective emergency relief during natural disasters and refugee situations. The Japanese government, Japanese business community and nongovernmental organization are integrated equally in order to draw on the resources and unique features of each sector.
