NYK-Operated Vessel Rescues Sailors in Distress

E-mail

On December 1, Crimson Mars, an NYK-operated wood-chip carrier, rescued five British sailors on a yacht in the Atlantic Ocean.

While heading from Macapa, Brazil, to Yarimca, Turkey, Crimson Mars received a distress signal at 3 p.m. local time. The NYK vessel immediately contacted the crippled yacht and the U.K MARCC to determine the yacht’s exact location. At 11 p.m. local time, five men were brought aboard using a life buoy and the pilot ladder.

The rescued men were sailing from the Canary Islands’ capital of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria to the Caribbean island of St. Lucia. However, engine failure led to the yachtsmen requiring assistance. The rescued men were in good health and disembarked from Crimson Mars at Gibraltar on December 7.
